Located in the heart of Pictou's technology corridor,
Lucas Technology and Analytics has been helping clients
improve their use of computers and data for just over
3 years. The owner, Luke Young, is a big booster of
Pictou County and enthusiastically recommends it to
people considering setting up their own businesses.

is that we are living in an information age. Day to
day, demands of people's ability to use the technology
are increasing rapidly. From shopping at the grocery
store to on-line banking for consumers or from inventory
management to line automation for businesses, the
challenge to understand and take advantage of technology
is always present. Companies, in particular, that
fail to recognize this challenge are in danger of
being left behind by their competitors who not only
understand the challenge but are actively finding
ways to beat it. That's where we come in – finding
or developing the right tools and helping people use
them."
Luke graduated from the University of Waterloo with
a Master's degree in Physics, with an emphasis on
vibration suppression. This experience taught him
a lot about the power of initiative and following
up the optimism with hard work. However, one thing
that was missing was the quality of life that he'd
learned to enjoy in his native Pictou County. Returning,
he worked at St. Francis Xavier University and then
Sobeys, in both cases gaining valuable experience
in how to generate useful information from data and
how to effectively communicate that information to
an audience.
While these experiences were valuable, it became
clear that he had to follow his heart by taking the
entrepreneurial plunge. In 2001, Lucas Technology
was started in Pictou with the goal of helping companies
to mine their data for information that could help
them become more effective in their fields. He quickly
found that although there was a need across Atlantic
Canada for his specialized solutions, local people
just wanted their stuff to work.
"Already, we've evolved from a very specialized
firm providing data mining solutions to a more broadly
based company. On the retail side, we sell the computers
and supplies that people need. We also teach people
how to use them in public or customized courses. For
more demanding requirements, we design solutions for
companies to manage their particular challenges. These
may include database design and / or application development.
We are particularly proud of our inventory management
system. It's so good, even we use it!"
Lucas Technology is all too aware that the opportunities
it has have come about because of a strong community
foundation. That's why giving back to the community
is a priority. Employees at Lucas give back in a variety
of ways – involvement in the Rotary Club, School
Advisory Committees, the We're Working Wonders Image
campaign and more.
